Space/Aeronautics Magazine (January 1969)

In honor of the 5oth Anniversary of the July 28th, 1969 moon landing I thought I’d post some scans from Space/Aeronautics magazine from that same year. Unfortunately, I only have through June!

As you can see, in January they are fully expecting the landing to go off beautifully. And that’s a great picture.

AH-56 Cheyenne and CL-84 helicopters

There’s probably more Aeronautics than Space in the magazine. It is a “trade” magazine, not a newsstand magazine. The advertising and articles are very focused on the business of engineering and production of all forms of flight, such as these two helicoptors.

One of the few whimsical ads, until a few months later. I’ll talk about that when we get to the May issue.

McDonnell Douglas Phantom FG.1

There is some really amazing artwork in these ads, like this picture of a jet plane landing on an aircraft carrier.

“Lunar orbit is no place to be alone.” Be sure you bring along a blonde in a yellow dress.

Notice, they also have an underwater craft.

Snap-On tool box

I was excited to see a Snap-On ad. Of course the only Snap-On tool I own is a screwdriver I found in the street.

B-24 Liberator

Each issue has a little history of a World War II bomber or plane.

Next time, the March issue.

  1. Cool stuff. Those middle to mid-late decades of the 20th Century were the high point of illustration. It’s like a lost art now.
