1988 VHS Video Club

Check out this Time Life Video Club insert (from a July 1988 TV Guide).  Just buy four tapes for $1.00 each, and be stuck with this horrible deal seemingly forever.  Once you enroll, you’ll have to buy five more at “regular club price” plus shipping and handling – which made these type of record and tape clubs a complete ripoff.

Still, look what you can get for a buck apiece! Police Academy 4, Superman 4: The Quest for Peace, Revenge of the Nerds 2, and Jewel of the Nile!

I do like that they include some more obscure and off-the-beaten path tapes.  Sure, you’ve got Dirty Dancing and Lethal Weapon… but you also have The Believers, Return of the Living Dead 2, and Blue Velvet.

Man, those aerobics VHS tapes were definitely the rage in the eighties. How many Jane Fonda workout videos were there?

  1. I enrolled in CD clubs multiple times, but we got a VCR so late that I don’t think we ever thought of buying tapes that way. (I did keep the stamp sheets from magazines, though) I can honestly say I’ve bought far more videotapes in the past 5-10 years than I did when tapes were “relevant,” as the kids say. The weirder the better. 🙂

    • I’m always on the lookout for “weirder the better” VHS when I’m scouring through flea markets and antique stores – but it is REALLY hard for me to find those. It’s always stuff like “Jerry McGuire” never “Werewolf Woman” if you know what I mean. It’s like all the fun obscure ones found their way to ebaby already.

  2. My local Salvation Army has about 30 of those old workout VHS tapes. A bunch more on DVD. People buy them, use them a few months, then they just sit, like the owners.
